How our Projects at Weer Africa Began

In 2010, the founders of Weer Africa began a program of research and outreach focused on shedding light on the daily experiences of Senegalese patients with diabetes and other Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD’s). The results of this work indicate several urgent needs including:

  • Medicine (money to purchase)
  • Medical supplies (e.g. Blood sugar monitors)
  • Dietary assistance (healthy food), and
  • Culturally grounded health education
  • NCD Prevention programming and education

As a result of these activities, we have developed and worked with an active and engaged diabetes support association (about 500 members) affiliated with the Hospital of M’Bour.

Today, Weer Africa stands as a non-profit organization that is fully dedicated to providing assistance, resources and health care services for the underprivileged population in Senegal who are facing NCD’s. We work with members of local organizations to help hospitals in the area acquire necessary NCD care supplies, conduct NCD related health education, community NCD screenings and opportunities for Senegalese health care providers to receive additional training in NCD care.

We hope to expand this work to other parts of Senegal and West Africa. With your help, this can be made possible.
